INTRODUCTION: All world religions and traditions have their own idea of what is considered evil and demonic. In some cultures, many of these ideas are identical if not at least similar. In other cultures, they may be completely opposite. Religions that have an omnipotent God such as Judaism and Christianity have some of the most elaborate constructions for the existence of evil in the world. Other religions such as Hinduism have mythological male and female deities with both positive and negative aspects. The term "demon" is derived ultimately from the Sanskrit root div (‘to shine’), through the Greek daimon (‘divine power’). To the Greeks, daimones were intermediary spirits between humans and the Gods. The original Greek term meant a wise, guardian spirit. Homer used the terms "demons" and "gods" more or less interchangeably. At that time, the word demon did not have the negative connotation that it carries today in present day spiritualism and parapsychology. Having said that, my definition of the term "demon" in these pages will be stated as a malevolent spiritual being, power, or principle in one of the belief systems of a world religion. A demon is a spirit, nature spirit, or non-human intelligence that interacts with the material world and is concerned with the direction of lower plane activities. The demon is always differentiated from the human or animal spirit which originated as a living spirit. Although many authorities in the paranormal field believe in the existence of demons, there are others who believe they do not exist outside the realm of the human mind. Our research group has been involved with several cases that focused on a negative non-human presence that typically would be categorized as ‘demonic’. We have also worked cases in which the homeowners believed so strongly in the “evil demons” that resided in the home that the only solution we could provide was to follow the rituals set forth by the Christian churches. Yet there have also been cases where one or more family members were simply in need of a reality check. I do not take sides on the issue of whether or not demons exist. I keep an open mind, learning from the research we have done and always remember, with all of that stated, let me introduce you to the generally accepted basic beliefs in what demons are…..
